About Mark Rober

Mark Rober is a former NASA engineer who makes science and engineering videos on a blockbuster budget. His builds range from booby-trapped packages for porch pirates to giant record-breaking contraptions.

Video one

Before YouTube was his job, Rober spent nine years at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, seven of them on the Curiosity Mars rover. His oldest public video, from 2011, is a Halloween costume that used two iPads to create the illusion of a hole through his torso. It went viral and hinted at what was to come.

The breakthrough

After a stint as a product designer at Apple, Rober went full-time on YouTube. His 2018 glitter-bomb video, built to catch package thieves, became one of the most-shared science videos ever and set the template: real engineering, explained with humour.

Today

He runs CrunchLabs, a subscription box of build-it-yourself toys that teach engineering thinking, and uses his channel for big collaborative projects such as the Team Trees and Team Seas fundraisers with MrBeast.
